Alaska is the largest state by land size, with 34,000 miles of coastline in (3) different waters (Arctic Ocean; Bearing Sea; and Pacific Ocean).  These 34,000 miles of coastline, are more than all of the other 49 states combined.  Alaska is often referred to as The Great Land, and The Land of the Midnight Sun.  It is our 49th State.  In the winter there’s very little sun, which makes for a perfect off-season opportunity to see the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights).  In the north the sun will rise on or around May 10th in Barrow, Alaska and will not set again for almost 3 months, while in November (on or around the 18th)), it will set and not rise again for almost 2 months.  Not many tourists go to Barrow, but the sun impact is still real in all of Alaska.  When most of us visit in the Summer, there is BIG time daylight.  In Fairbanks, where the sunlight will shine for 24 hours on June 21st, it will continue to shine for more than 18 hours a day for the rest of the summer.  Glaciers are also a BIG thing in Alaska. There are more than 100,000 glaciers, and they cover roughly 5% of the state’s land mass.  Yet that 5% of glaciers represents approximately 50% of the entire world’s glaciers.  Let’s also not forget about the BIG Mountain (Mount Denali – the highest peak in North America); and the BIG National Parks, 7 of the 10 largest parks are ALL in Alaska.  Pretty BIG stuff there that’s for sure.
